The situation in Ukraine

Most international observers described Ukraine's parliamentary elections in 2012 as unfair because opposition leaders were arrested before the election campaign began.

Moreover, the ruling party abused administrative resources for campaigning purposes and there was no transparency with regard to party financing.

What was the Greens' position?

The Greens advocate human rights in third countries, and we regularly use resolutions on the situations there to raise awareness of discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people (LGBT).

In this case, we decided to use the more general resolution on Ukraine to draw attention to LGBT rights violations in Ukraine, which the United Nations had already criticised.

Did other MEPs accept the Greens' position?

The Greens succeeded in using the resolution on Ukraine to draw attention to LGBT rights in that country.

Parliament supported our amendment requesting that the Ukrainian government withdraw Bill 8711, which the United Nations had already identified as breaching UN human rights law.

Which points did the Greens lose?

In general, the Greens were satisfied with the result.

Since Parliament's opinion on foreign affairs is not legally binding, conflict over issues in this domain is rare.
