Aid economic recovery by granting Community financial assistance to renewable energy and energy efficiency projects

In response to the economic crisis, the EU adopted a programme earmarking €4 billion for energy investment projects by the end of 2010.

Not all these resources were used.

The Greens in Parliament launched a new fund to use up all the unspent money set aside for investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

What was the Greens' position?

Being the initiators of the fund, the Greens strongly advocated its implementation.

We believe that even comparably small energy efficiency and renewable energy projects can have a domino effect, especially in an urban environment

Did other MEPs accept the Greens' position?

We succeeded in launching the fund with the support of a majority in Parliament.

The total amount available for investments is around €146 million, 15% of which will be made available for technical assistance rather than for direct investment in projects.

Which points did the Greens lose?

We were unable to ensure that all the unspent money is channelled into the fund.

Even though we had the support of a majority in Parliament, several Member States, including Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK, insisted on allocating just a fraction of the unspent money to the new fund.

As a result, the fund turned out to be around a quarter of the size it could have been.
